Abstract

The article considers the problems of accumulation, analysis and scientific generalization of information and materials about traditional clothing of the Chuvash people in the second half of the 19^th – early 20^th century The study of the Chuvash traditional clothing was due to the state of historical and ethnographic science in the country and the region. The effectiveness of scientific search largely depended on the qualifications of the authors, on the goals and tasks facing them. It is established that in the second half of the 19^th century the centers of ethnographic research about the Chuvash were scientific and educational institutions of Kazan and Simbirsk. The study of the Chuvash traditional clothing in the second half of 19^th – early 20^th century became the most effective. The development of science and education in the country and the region influenced the improvement in the quality of ethnographic research during this period. The greatest contribution to the study of traditional Chuvash clothing was made by scientists who came from the thick of the people and grew up among the Chuvash: N.V. Nikolsky, G.I. Komissarov, N.I. Zolotnitsky, V.K. Magnitsky, N.I. Ashmarin. The material obtained during the research expands the historiography for the study of traditional Chuvash clothing and will become the basis for solving new research problems in the field of scientific Chuvash studies.
