Abstract
The present review contains an assessment of a monographic study conducted largely on the basis of unpublished data and an already existing array of documents covering a previously closed topic of constructing military field construction facilities in the territory of the Chuvash ASSR in autumn-winter of 1941–1942.
It is necessary to note the uniqueness of this scientific publication for the formation of a historiographical base for studying the history of Sursko-Kazan defense lines in the territory of our republic, since such studies have not been conducted before. Concerning the peculiarities of the language and stylistics of the work, its popular scientific presentation should be noted. The authors made a significant contribution to the policy of historical memory about the builders of Chuvashia’s defense lines during the Great Patriotic War. The analysis of the source base made it possible to reveal a complex of construction aspects: controlling and managing the process, mobilization of labor resources, working conditions and prevailing moods, the fate of the erected objects.
In addition to restoring the historical panorama, the authors separately analyzed commemorative practices and measures to perpetuate the memory of the events under study. In the course of the work, problematic issues were highlighted: the lack of photographic documentation and cartographic sources, the problem of mortality during the construction of objectives remains unresolved due to the lack of archival evidence. Not all construction sites have sources of personal origin; we observe the uneven nature of block in memories in spatial terms.
