Abstract
The review evaluates the monograph, in which the author, based on a wide range of sources, examines the activities of the Russian medical community to combat social diseases at the turn of the XIX–XX centuries. The issues related to countering the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, tuberculosis, alcoholism are outlined. Attention is focused on the features for analyzing the periodicals of the largest all-Russian medical societies. The author reveals the difficulties in the process of forming a mechanism of interaction between the general public and the authorities on the problems of determining the socio-economic causes of population’s mass morbidity, as well as policies to preserve public health. The author of the review notes the strengths of the monographic research, which include the scientific novelty of the research, disclosure of the main public work-streams to improve the health of the society, the practical significance of the work. The emphasis is also placed on the analytical comparative analysis of the processes of countering major social diseases within the framework of the journalistic and practical activity of public health professionals. As the strengths of the monograph, the author of the review emphasizes the methodology of historical research, which can be traced throughout the work.
