Abstract

The article analyzes the results of the activities of Orthodox charitable foundations and their relationship with Orthodox religious organizations of Togliatti, municipal authorities, and the business community in 1996–2001. The study covers the years 1996–2001, since during this period it is possible to analyze the activities of the Orthodox charitable foundations “Togliatti-Pravoslavny” and “Resurrection”.

The purpose of the study is to reveal the nature and evaluate the results of the activities of the Orthodox charitable foundations “Togliatti-Pravoslavny” and “Resurrection”.

Methods and materials. The implementation of the study was achieved on the basis of the use of materials from the municipal state institution “Togliatti Archive”, the current archive of the Samara diocesan administration, data from periodicals, materials from the author’s personal archive: reports of officials on the religious situation in the Samara region and Togliatti. When deciding on the reliability and representativeness of the sources introduced into circulation, the history of the origin and fate of these sources was studied using meaningful and correlation analysis. The sources were analyzed to identify patterns in the ongoing changes in religious life and trends in its formation. The methodology of the study includes the method of document analysis; in the work with materials of the periodical press, the method of synchronous comparison with documentary material was used. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the disclosure of the forms and methods of interaction between the Russian Orthodox Church and the city authorities and the business community.

Research results. It is said that in the mid 1990s 20^th century it became possible to create, with the participation of state and municipal structures, business, together with the Russian Orthodox Church, Orthodox charitable foundations, which, in the conditions of the separation of the state from the Church, became public associations of representatives of government, business, the Russian Orthodox Church to solve the church fore problems: the allocation of land for the construction of religious buildings and the construction of the buildings themselves. It is proved that in this way the principle of separation of the state from the Church was observed, and at the same time, the financing of religious structures was carried out through charitable foundations.

Conclusions. Creation of religious charitable foundations “Togliatti -Orthodox” and “Resurrection” in the middle and late 90s 20^th century allowed the authorities of the city of Togliatti to provide financial support to Orthodox religious organizations not directly, but indirectly. Charitable religious foundations in the context of the separation of the state from the Russian Orthodox Church, became public associations of representatives of government, business, the Russian Orthodox Church, to solve church problems: the allocation of land for the construction of religious buildings and the construction of the buildings themselves. Thus, the principle of separating the state from the Russian Orthodox Church was observed, and at the same time it was possible to provide funding for religious structures through charitable foundations.
