The Russian physical culture and sports movement has come a long way in its development over its long history, and formation of departmental voluntary sports societies (VSS) played an important role as its part. One of the first sports associations in various sectors of the national economy began to be created, which had the common name «Trud» and was reorganized in 1957 into the All-Union Voluntary Sports Society, which became the largest sports association with established traditions that led to the achievement of the highest sports results by members of the society. This circumstance determines the relevance of identifying the factors and conditions that contributed to the formation and development of sports in the VSS »Trud».

The purpose of the study is to identify the factors and conditions for sambo development in the republican VSS «Trud» in the Chuvash ASSR.

Material and methods. The study uses general scientific methods: analysis, generalization and interpretation of data from the State Historical Archive of the Chuvash Republic, the State Archive of Contemporary History of the Chuvash Republic, scientific and methodological literature and publications in periodicals.

Research results. In the course of studying historical documents and periodicals, it was established that the chronology of the republican voluntary sports society «Trud» in the Chuvash Republic begins on November 28, 1957. The founders of sambo in the republican voluntary sports society «Trud» are identified, as well as their associates who had a significant impact on the dynamic development of sambo, the dynamics of the number of sambo practitioners is shown, outstanding athletes who have achieved high sports results are listed. The importance of personal and managerial factors that influenced the dynamism and intensity of the development of sambo in the republican voluntary sports society «Trud» is emphasized.

Conclusions. Based on the analysis and generalization of archival data and publications in the periodicals, personal and managerial factors were identified that ensured the active development of sambo.
